Due to the simplicity and robustness of the rotor of the synchronous reluctance machines, they are widely used in many different kinds of applications. Some drawbacks like high torque ripple and low power factor make these machines less favorable. Insertion of magnet to some extend can compensate these drawbacks, but the magnet itself can cause the torque ripple to increase so designing an appropriate structure for the flux barrier can greatly enhance the torque ripple. In this paper the effect of different barrier configurations such as barrier shapes and their angles on the performance of a PM-assisted synchronous reluctance machine are evaluated. A 4-pole 1.5kw synchronous reluctance machine is considered and the ferrite magnets are inserted in the rotor barriers while keeping the insulation ratio constant and the performance of each structure is studied. Simulations are done in FEM 2D and the results are evaluated.
